Rules of graphic design

The wasted logo
Imagine you’re Daren Newman, given the job of designing the unofficial logo for the Olympic Games. You do the job; you cleverly combine the national flag and the five rings and the design is described by most in the industry as a masterclass in design. Can’t wait for 4 billion people to see that on TV…
Title sequences
Of course there is a searchable web site that interviews designers about the title sequences they create for TV series. Only a real geek would follow that link. Here is the interview that covers a personal favourite: Mad Men. “AMC had all kinds of issues with having someone falling from a skyscraper.”
Vale Milton Glaser
From the New York Times: “I’m flabbergasted by what happened to this little, simple nothing of an idea,” the designer Milton Glaser told The Village Voice in 2011. His idea for that 1977 tourism campaign was sketched on the back of an envelope with red crayon during a taxi ride. He did the work pro-bono.
Glaser died last week, aged 91.
Social distancing animation
So out of nowhere, the concept of social distancing is universally understood. You’ve probably seen this short animation with a beautifully simply analogy. One graphic designer, 12 second animation, millions of shares, positive impact in a crisis. Well played that man; Spanish-born LA-based graphic designer and director Juan Delcan.
Hand Lettering Logos
Warning: this video may make you feel annoyed or inadequate. Seb Lester is the perpetrator. Think how good he’d be if he was allowed to rule a few lines…
